How to use social media icons well

Social icons do two different jobs: they link out to your profiles, and they let people act inside your product by liking, commenting, sharing and following. Treat the two groups differently.

Brand logos vs. action icons

Logos for networks like YouTube or Instagram belong to those companies, and most publish brand guidelines on color, spacing and minimum size. Keep their shapes unchanged and follow those guidelines. Action icons such as a heart, speech bubble, share arrow or bell are generic, so you can restyle them freely to match your interface.

Pick a style that matches your feed

  • Line icons suit dense screens like feeds and toolbars, where the content should stand out more than the buttons.
  • Solid icons work well for active states. An outlined heart that fills in when liked is a pattern people already know.
  • Flat and gradient artwork fits marketing pages, social banners and slides.

Make buttons easy to tap

Share and like buttons are mostly tapped on phones. Give each icon a touch area of at least 44 × 44 px, even when the icon itself is 20–24 px, and give every button an accessible name such as "Share on X" so screen readers announce what it does.

Counts and notifications

Like and follower counts usually sit next to the icon. Keep the number in the same color as the icon and align it to the icon's center line. For notification bells, a small dot or a number badge on the top corner is enough. Don't redraw the bell for the unread state, so the shape stays familiar.

Footer and profile links

Footer links look tidier when every logo sits inside the same shape. A pack of circle or square icons, or the background shapes in the editor, gives each network the same footprint. Use one color for all of them, or each brand's own color, but don't mix the two approaches.

Before you download

  • Keep brand logos and generic action icons as separate groups in your design file.
  • Check each network's brand guidelines for color and minimum size.
  • Pick one style for all action icons, with filled versions for active states.
  • Plan touch areas of at least 44 × 44 px on mobile.
  • Write an accessible name for every icon-only button.

Questions sur les icônes social media

Des réponses courtes sur les formats, la modification et l'utilisation.

Can I change the colors of social media logos?

Generic action icons like hearts, comments and share arrows can be any color. For brand logos, check the network's brand guidelines first: most allow one-color versions, but not changes to the logo's shape.

What size should social icons be?

In interfaces, 20–24 px icons inside a 44 px touch area work well. In footers, 24–32 px is common. Download SVG files so the icons stay sharp at any size.

How do I make social buttons accessible?

Give every icon-only button a text label for screen readers, for example "Follow us on Instagram", and make sure the icon has enough contrast against the background.

Can I use social media icons in commercial projects?

Yes. IconHub icons are free for personal and commercial projects with attribution. You can't resell them as files or use them in a logo. The license page has the full summary.
