Choosing flag icons for your product
Flags show up in language pickers, shipping forms, sports scores and travel pages. Each job wants a slightly different flag, so decide where the flags will live before you download anything.
Rectangle, circle or pin?
- Rectangle flags keep real-world proportions. They read best in tables, country dropdowns and anywhere people need to recognize a flag quickly.
- Circle flags crop every flag to the same round shape, so long lists line up neatly. They suit avatars, chips, currency switchers and mobile menus.
- Map pins put the flag inside a marker. Use them on store finders, office maps and "where we ship" pages.
Size and detail
Flags with fine detail, such as coats of arms, lose clarity below 20 px. For small UI, pick a flat or line pack with simplified emblems and keep flags at 20–24 px. Every icon is a vector SVG, so larger flags for hero sections and slides stay sharp at any size.
A flag is not a language
A flag stands for a country, not a language. Spanish is an official language in around 20 countries, so a Spanish flag in a language switcher can confuse people in Mexico or Argentina. Show the language name in its own script ("Español", "Deutsch", "العربية") and use the flag only as a helper, or leave it out.
Keep the whole set consistent
Mixing flags from different packs puts different corner radii, outlines and shadows next to each other. Pick one pack that covers every country you need and use it everywhere. The pack page lists every icon, so you can check coverage before you start, and you can save a pack to a collection to come back to it later.
Before you download
- List every country you need, including regions such as Scotland or Hong Kong, and check that the pack covers them.
- Choose one shape (rectangle, circle or pin) for the whole product.
- Check how the flags look at your smallest size, usually 16–20 px.
- Plan a fallback for missing flags, such as a neutral globe icon.
- Keep the country name next to the flag so screen readers and new users understand it.
Need one specific country? Search flag icons by country name, or open any flag in the editor to resize it, add a background shape or export it as SVG or PNG.
Preguntas sobre iconos de flag
Respuestas breves sobre formatos, edición y uso.
Which flag style works best in a language switcher?
Show the language name first, written in its own script, and treat the flag as optional. If you do use flags, small circle flags at about 20 px line up neatly in a dropdown. Keep in mind that one language can belong to many countries.
Do flag packs include every country?
Pack sizes range from a few dozen flags to several hundred, and larger packs often add regions and organizations. Open the pack page to see every flag it includes before you download.
Should I use SVG or PNG for flags?
Use SVG on websites and in apps: it stays sharp on every screen and is usually smaller than a PNG. Download a PNG at the exact size you need for tools that don't accept vectors, such as some email builders.
Can I use flag icons in commercial projects?
Yes. IconHub icons are free for personal and commercial projects with attribution. You can't resell them as files or use them in a logo. The license page has the full summary.
